The Autistic Spectrum extends to contain at one combination of characteristics, people who win Nobel Prizes because they are very smart. What AutismSpeaks grew from are those autistics who are head bangers, hand flappers and severely learning disabled and non-verbal. This was the case for Bob Wright who formed the organization after having an autistic grandchild.

As the product of the research effort grows and is transmitted into the body of knowledge it becomes known that autistics are not considered employable. I have found this to be the case from my own experiences long before anyone discovered autism existed.
